Dear friend,

Yesterday at Bethlehem we observed the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost and focused on Jesus’ story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. One main takeaway: with much noise and confusion all around us, it is necessary to listen to Christ and His word above all. The truth and wisdom of Jesus provide the clarity we need to put our faith into action. Second main takeaway: we are given our remaining days on earth to show love.

Here’s how I put it yesterday:

  • Christ shows us that love leads us to our heavenly Father
  • Love leads us into genuine fellowship with God
  • Love brings us to share in the eternal peace and happiness that the Trinity has
  • Love reattaches the deep connection we’re intended to have with one another
  • Love builds the relationships we were created for
  • Love is the foundation for the church to persevere in Jesus’ name

We also enjoyed great discussion on the Epistle reading, 1 Timothy 6, in our Sunday Bible class. That will continue at this Wednesday’s GracePlace with our continuing exploration of the church’s mission here and now. Bring a little sustenance for supper together at 5, then we’ll study together at 6, then we’ll pray together at 7.

Next Sunday is one of the true celebrations that we have every year—LWML Sunday. We will rejoice to highlight and thank God for our Lutheran Women in Mission! Wear purple if you can find some. Bring extra money/Mites for the offering at the door. Prepare to find your place in the Lord’s work as the Holy Spirit moves among us.

In Christ,

Pastor Heckmann
