The Pharisees set a trap with no safe exit, and Jesus answers it with a line that has outlived every one of them. Pastor Loeschen takes up the question of what belongs to Caesar and what belongs to God during the month of the Reformation, and shows how a Christian lives as a citizen of two kingdoms at once. The treasure in view is twofold, covering what God gives for the body and what he gives for the soul, and all of it comes free.
This episode draws from the Holy Gospel reading of St. Matthew 22:15-22.
Key themes include render to Caesar and render to God, the two kingdoms of church and state, the Reformation and the solas of grace and faith and scripture, a Christ-centered church over a man-centered one, Christian stewardship and citizenship, and the treasure of forgiveness and life and salvation given freely.
