Finding Ways to Serve with Neva Broad

Bethlehem Lutheran Church has a long history of service in our community. Many of our members have been a part of our church for decades, and their service footprint changes and evolves over time. Neva Broad, or Aunt Neva as everyone calls her, is one of those people whose faith and heart for service, along with a healthy dose of charming “sass”, makes her a treasure and excellent teacher for all of us!

If there’s one thing we can say about Neva, she will find a way to serve our community and our Lord. Always ready with a quick smile and twinkle in her eye, she is renowned in Palestine for her pies. When our church has a bake sale, you can bet those pies are reserved early and often. Perhaps in the future, we’ll visit Neva again so she can “take us to school” on how she concocts her delicious homemade crust and fillings.

For now we’re talking about her contribution to Bethlehem Lutheran Church’s Christmas decorations. Neva handcrafts stunning ornaments, literally one bead at a time to adorn the Christmas Tree in our sanctuary. Each ornament can take up to three months to put together.

The ornaments are “Chrismon” ornaments. The name is derived from “Christ Monogram” and they are religious symbols representing many aspects of the Christian faith.

As you will see, Chrismons are traditionally white (the liturgical color of Christmas)  that signifies joy and holiness and often gold, representing the glory, majesty, and kingship of Jesus.
