Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:3-5
God’s Word – the Bible – always gives us good ways to live, like verses 3 and 4. The challenge is that, in our human nature, we only think of the ways, and not the why. This section of Scripture gives us both the ‘what’ and the ‘why.’
What is in this section is the lifestyle of a child of God. The ‘what’ is to insure that our attitude is something we constantly monitor which is the ‘Let not’ part. That is an action on our part. It is so easy to let the daily chores and cares lead our thinking.
The world we live in demands attention. That is okay, and normal. However, we don’t need to let the world shape or dictate our attitude. Sadly many people do, and our political climate keeps us stirred up and unsettled and even apprehensive which can lead to anger and even, sin. Remember that we can choose what we think about, and even more, we can choose how we think about those things.
Verse 5 really helps our choosing because it reminds us that God has a higher purpose in this life. We might not see where this is all going, but He does. His plan has not changed since the Garden of Eden – to bring us home. That is still the plan. Jesus shows how much He wants that ‘coming home’ for each of us. Praise God for His love for each of us.
