“From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
-Matthew 4:17
We all like our own ideas. After all, we are convinced that, at least many, if not all, of our ideas are pretty good, and have gotten us pretty far in life. The evidence seems to confirm our thinking.
Then, these two guys come along, one after the other calling for us to ‘repent.’ First, the weird one who has a unusual diet and clothing, and then the miracle-performing guy who says the same thing the first one said.
Why would we want to admit we are not perfect? Because it is good for us. The Creator of all knows everything about us. We might as well admit it too. Repentance opens the door to forgiveness, opens the path of humility, opens our hearts and minds to the Spirit’s help to be more like the second guy – Jesus.
